Gutenberg in Numbers
by Johnson, Henry Lewis

The Gutenberg Bible contains a total of 1282 pages, with two columns of text per printed page. The first edition consisted of 200 copies—165 copies on paper and 35 copies of lower print quality on vellum that were divided into two or three volumes, allowing the book to be thinner and thereby easier to carry around. Gutenberg used a wooden press to produce over 400 fonts. The exquisite colored initials shown in this image appeared throughout the book.
